France booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging Paraguay 1-0 in a tense and fiercely contested Round of 16 clash on Saturday night at Philadelphia Stadium.
The decisive moment came in the 70th minute when captain Kylian Mbappe calmly converted a penalty to break Paraguay’s stubborn resistance and secure France’s place in the last eight, where they will face Morocco.
Paraguay, who stunned Germany in the previous round, frustrated the French for much of the encounter with a disciplined defensive display despite the sweltering 39-degree Celsius conditions. The South Americans limited Didier Deschamps’ side to long-range efforts and successfully slowed the tempo of the game.
France eventually found the breakthrough after the introduction of Desire Doue. The substitute was brought down inside the penalty area by Diego Gomez. Although referee Ilgiz Tantashev initially waved away France’s appeals, the decision was overturned following a VAR review, awarding Les Bleus a penalty.
Paraguayan players attempted to delay the kick and disrupt the penalty spot, but Mbappe remained composed and sent his effort into the bottom corner to score his seventh FIFA World Cup goal, drawing level with Argentina captain in the tournament’s all-time scoring charts.
The goal also extended Mbappe’s remarkable record in World Cup knockout matches. The France skipper has now scored 11 goals in knockout games, the highest tally by any player in the competition’s history.
Paraguay pushed for a late equaliser, but frustration increasingly took over as the closing stages were marked by a series of heavy challenges and heated confrontations between both teams. France were left unhappy with the officiating after several robust tackles went unpunished and no Paraguayan player received a booking despite repeated protests.
Mbappe nearly doubled France’s lead in stoppage time, only to be denied by an outstanding double save from Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill.
The final whistle sparked further tension between the players, bringing an end to an ill-tempered contest that saw France maintain their quest for another World Cup title while Paraguay exited the tournament after a spirited performance.
