The All Progressives Congress in Oyo State has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to urgently address what it described as the “unacceptable decay” in the health and education sectors.
The party made the call on Tuesday in Ibadan, following a viral video showing an unidentified man lamenting the absence of doctors and other medical personnel at Adeoyo State Hospital, Yemetu, Ibadan.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC criticized the state government’s approach to citizens’ welfare beyond salary and pension payments, as well as what it termed “cosmetic projects” funded by federal allocations, grants and interventions.
Sadare said, “Despite having access to huge funds, the Makinde administration has failed to deliver good governance across board.
“Apart from local government officials who exist only in name, most commissioners and appointees are not visible or productive because Governor Makinde runs a one-man show.
“In the health sector, the only things this government can point to are payment of staff salaries and renovation of some Primary Health Centres. But LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, Adeoyo hospitals in Yemetu and Ring Road, Ibadan, and general hospitals across towns are in a state of disrepair.
“Most public hospitals in Oyo do not have functional laboratories. Critical equipment such as MRI and X-ray machines are also missing.
“The viral video of the angry man at Adeoyo State Hospital, Yemetu, complaining about the absence of doctors, is proof of the rot in the system. What is more painful is that the State Commissioner for Health is nowhere to be found.”
On education, Sadare said the situation in most public primary and secondary schools is also poor, with dilapidated classrooms and teachers burdened by excessive deductions from salaries and allowances.
“As a matter of fact, we are worried that things may get worse before the end of Governor Makinde’s tenure, because he has shown that he is more interested in personal ambition and politics than in providing quality leadership and value for the huge resources available to the state,” he added.
