South African football has been thrown into mourning following the death of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams, who passed away at the age of 25, just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The cause of his death has not yet been confirmed.
South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, announced Adams’ death on Saturday, describing the talented midfielder as one of the country’s brightest football stars whose passing has left the nation in shock.
“It is with profound shock and a heavy heart that I have learnt of the passing of Jayden Adams,” McKenzie said in a statement.
“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international.”
According to the BBC, South African police have opened an investigation after the body of a 25-year-old man was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, a suburb of central Cape Town, on Saturday morning.
McKenzie urged the public and the media to refrain from speculating about the circumstances surrounding Adams’ death until the authorities conclude their investigation.
“The cause of Jayden’s passing has not yet been confirmed. I appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the privacy they need during this difficult time. Any official information will be communicated by the appropriate authorities,” he added.
Adams was a key member of South Africa’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring in all three group-stage matches as Bafana Bafana reached the knockout stage for the first time in the tournament’s history. Their impressive run ended in the Round of 32 after a narrow defeat to co-hosts Canada.
During the World Cup, Adams also earned widespread admiration after playing in South Africa’s 1-1 draw with the Czech Republic just hours after receiving the heartbreaking news of his grandmother’s death, a display of commitment that resonated with fans across the globe.
The South African Football Players Union described his death as an immeasurable loss to the country’s football community.
Adams made his senior international debut in 2022 and was part of the South African team that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations.
At club level, he began his professional career with Stellenbosch FC before completing a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. During his time with the Pretoria-based club, he helped them win the South African Premiership title and the CAF Champions League, establishing himself as one of the country’s most promising midfielders.
