England secured their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coming from behind to defeat DR Congo 2–1 in an entertaining Round of 32 clash at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday.
The Three Lions were stunned early in the contest when DR Congo took the lead in the seventh minute through B. Cipenga, leaving England chasing the game for much of the encounter.
Despite dominating possession and creating chances, England struggled to break through a disciplined Congolese defence for long periods.
However, captain Harry Kane stepped up when it mattered most.
Kane restored parity in the 75th minute to bring England back into the contest before completing the turnaround with his second goal of the evening in the 86th minute, sealing victory and sending England into the next round.
The dramatic comeback ensured England avoided a major upset and kept their World Cup ambitions alive.
DR Congo, who impressed with their organisation and early attacking intent, bowed out of the tournament after pushing one of the favourites close.
England will now shift attention to the Round of 16 as they continue their pursuit of World Cup glory.
