FIFA bans Leandro Paredes for 10 matches over Argentina-Spain clash
FIFA has handed Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes a 10-match suspension for his involvement in the post-match altercation that followed Argentina’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final defeat to Spain.
The FIFA Disciplinary Committee announced the sanction on Friday, August 21, following its investigation into the violent scenes that erupted after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final.
Paredes was found to have committed multiple offences relating to aggression during the confrontation with Spanish players after the final whistle. FIFA had earlier opened disciplinary proceedings against the midfielder over his conduct during the incident.
Other players and officials were also sanctioned. Argentina defender Nahuel Molina received a seven-match suspension, while Thiago Almada was handed a one-match ban. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was suspended for three matches, while Spain midfielder Gavi received a one-match suspension.
The sanctions will apply to international matches and will not affect the players’ participation for their respective clubs.
The post-match controversy overshadowed Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, which was decided after extra time.
Paredes had been at the centre of the confrontation, which involved several players from both sides shortly after the final whistle. FIFA subsequently opened a formal disciplinary investigation into the incidents before announcing the sanctions.
FIFA also imposed a financial sanction on the Argentine Football Association over a political banner displayed by Argentina players following their semi-final victory over England.
