Paris Saint-Germain have retained the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Aston Villa 2-1 in a thrilling contest at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg on Wednesday night.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia gave the European champions an early lead before 17-year-old Aston Villa forward Brian Madjo made history by becoming the youngest player to score in the competition.
Desire Doue, however, restored PSG’s advantage in the second half as Luis Enrique’s side held on to claim the first silverware of the 2026/27 season.
PSG took control after 20 minutes when Kvaratskhelia cut inside from the left before producing a composed finish that wrong-footed Villa goalkeeper Marco Bizot.
Villa responded strongly and levelled shortly before half-time through Madjo, who marked his professional debut in remarkable fashion.
The 17-year-old shrugged off the challenge of PSG defender Willian Pacho before meeting the ball with a well-taken volley to make it 1-1.
Madjo’s goal also saw him become the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Super Cup history.
The teenager continued to pose a threat after the break and came close to adding another goal, with three further efforts narrowly missing the target.
Villa were forced to rely heavily on their younger players, with Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa and Emiliano Martinez unavailable following their extended post-World Cup breaks.
That gave Madjo and 19-year-old George Hemmings the opportunity to make their mark against a PSG side packed with established stars.
Hemmings almost put Villa ahead after PSG regained the lead, but goalkeeper Matvey Safonov produced an important save to keep out his effort.
PSG eventually restored their advantage in the 61st minute when Doue finished off a quick move to make it 2-1.
The 21-year-old found space behind the Villa defence and kept his composure to beat Bizot and put the French champions back in front.
Villa pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but PSG’s defence held firm to secure another European trophy.
The victory means PSG begin their 2026/27 campaign with silverware, while Villa can take encouragement from a spirited performance despite the absence of several senior players.
The result also continued the competitive nature of the fixture between the two sides, who produced a memorable 5-4 Champions League thriller when they last met in 2025.
For PSG, however, the night belonged to Doue and the reigning European champions, who held their nerve in Salzburg to retain the UEFA Super Cup.
