President Bola Tinubu has approved a sweeping directive that prohibits Nigeria’s military personnel from engaging in homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality, cross-dressing, and other behaviors deemed incompatible with the armed forces’ ethics.
The new regulation, signed on December 16, 2024, under the revised Harmonised Armed Forces Terms and Conditions of Service, also outlaws body piercing, tattoos, public disorder, and drunkenness both on and off duty.
The document, obtained by our correspondent, clearly states that military officers are barred from joining LGBTQIA2S+ groups, engaging in amorous relationships with subordinates, or participating in political parties or secret societies.
Officers must also refrain from operating private businesses or misusing government property.
While the document outlines strict behavioral codes, it does not specify the punishments for violations.
