The Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Adewunmi Onanuga, has tragically passed away after a brief illness on January 15, 2025.
The announcement was made by House Spokesman Akin Rotimi in a statement released Wednesday evening.
Adewunmi Onanuga, who represented the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency of Ogun State, was known for her unwavering commitment to public service.
She was first elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023, where she was appointed Deputy Chief Whip of the 10th Assembly.
Onanuga was a passionate advocate for women’s empowerment and social welfare, serving as the Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in the 9th Assembly.
Her colleagues and constituents admired her leadership, humility, and dedication, earning her the affectionate nickname “Ijaya.”
Her death is a significant loss to Nigeria’s political landscape, and she will be remembered for her tireless efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians, particularly her constituents in Ogun State.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by her family. May her soul rest in peace.
