Zuriel Oduwole, a passionate advocate for peace, education, and gender equality, has been nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.
A press release on Sunday highlighted her significant involvement in global diplomacy, shaping discussions on education, peace, and providing opportunities for marginalized communities, all while driving meaningful change.
Oduwole, born in Los Angeles to Nigerian grandparents, has engaged with numerous world leaders, including presidents and prime ministers, to address policy and development challenges.
Her work primarily focuses on improving access to education for marginalized communities and advocating for systemic change.
At the age of 13, Oduwole played a key role in mediating a territorial dispute between Guyana and Venezuela, meeting with then-President David Granger at the United Nations to stress the importance of peaceful dialogue.
In 2020, she consulted with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on global peace strategies during the Arab blockade of Qatar, which ultimately ended peacefully in 2021.
The statement emphasized that Oduwole’s nomination not only honors her dedication but also highlights Nigeria’s growing influence on the global stage.
Her advocacy for education, which she considers vital for development and stability, has been a cornerstone of her mission since a young age. Oduwole’s commitment began when, at just nine years old, she witnessed young girls in Accra selling goods instead of attending school.
This experience inspired her to use documentary filmmaking to raise awareness about the barriers to education.
Upon learning of her Nobel Peace Prize nomination, Oduwole, who is also a filmmaker, expressed a desire for greater investment in young girls, stating, “I have never sought recognition, only to speak up where it’s needed. This honor reflects the urgent need to invest in young voices as agents of change.”
As the founder of ‘Dream Up, Speak Up, Stand,’ she empowers young people, especially girls, to advocate for their rights and future opportunities.
Through storytelling and diplomacy, Oduwole has inspired positive change, influencing policies and fostering a more inclusive and equitable world. The Norwegian Nobel Committee is expected to announce the 2025 laureates later this year.
“Regardless of the outcome, Oduwole’s nomination highlights the growing influence of youth advocacy in global policy and sustainable peace efforts,” the statement concluded.
The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the world’s highest honors, recognizing individuals and organizations that have made exceptional contributions to peace and human rights.
