The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has ushered in a new leadership, with Oladoja Olusola elected as the National President at the organization’s national convention.
The election, which took place in the early hours of today in Abuja, also saw the emergence of other key leaders.
Suleiman Seriku, Chairman of the Convention Committee, confirmed the results, announcing Anzaku Shedrack as the new General Secretary.
A statement issued by Seriku read: “The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) successfully elected a new leadership team at its convention held on February 26, 2022, at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja. The election was widely hailed as free, fair, and peaceful, marking a significant moment in NANS’ history and setting a new standard for democratic transitions within the association.”
The statement continued, “Comrade Oladoja Olusola was elected as the National President, expected to lead with a focus on unity, student welfare, and national progress. Anzaku Shedrack will serve as General Secretary, while Usman Adamu was chosen as Senate President. Additional key leaders include Adeyemi Samson as Public Relations Officer (PRO) and Adejuwon Olatunji as Assistant Secretary General, among others.”
The convention was notably peaceful, in stark contrast to previous elections that were often marred by tension. Delegates from various institutions across the country participated, ensuring the election’s transparency and democratic integrity.
Following the announcement of his election, Comrade Olusola thanked Nigerian students for their trust and pledged to prioritize student welfare, educational development, and advocacy for better policies affecting students nationwide.
“This victory is not just for me but for every Nigerian student. Together, we will work to make NANS a powerful voice for students across the country,” he said.
Other elected officials reiterated their commitment to serve with diligence, focusing on unity, academic excellence, and active engagement with key stakeholders to drive positive change.
“Our administration will focus on making NANS student-centered, proactive, and impactful,” Olusola stated. “We will work towards fostering unity among students, engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders, and ensure our advocacy leads to real results.”
He highlighted key priorities, including improving education standards, enhancing student welfare, and safeguarding student rights. Olusola also stressed the importance of creating employment opportunities for graduates by partnering with both the government and private sector, as well as strengthening NELFUND for better access to educational financing and post-graduation support.
The peaceful conduct of the election has been widely praised, marking a milestone in NANS’ history and setting a high bar for future democratic transitions. Former student leaders and various stakeholders commended the process and urged the new executive to work in unity for the advancement of Nigerian students.
