The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has dismissed claims that it recently laid off 3,000 employees, calling the reports inaccurate and misleading.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, IBEDC clarified that its workforce consists of approximately 2,500 employees, making it impossible to dismiss more workers than it employs.
“The total number of IBEDC employees is around 2,500. How could we possibly dismiss more than our total workforce?” the statement read.
The company also pointed out that such mass layoffs would severely impact its ability to operate and serve its customers.
IBEDC further criticized the persistent misinformation linking it to issues faced by a different organization and its staff. It urged journalists and the public to verify facts before spreading false reports.
“As a responsible corporate entity committed to ethical human resource practices, we encourage the media and the public to confirm details before publishing misleading reports,” IBEDC stated.
Reassuring customers of its commitment to quality service and operational transparency, IBEDC emphasized its dedication to high service standards and ethical conduct.
Meanwhile, reports had earlier surfaced of protests led by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Oyo State chapter, involving workers hired through a recruitment outsourcing firm for IBEDC. The protesters demanded higher wages, better promotion opportunities, and claimed that some of their members had been terminated.
Labour union leaders, including the recently retired Commissioner of Police, Ayodele Sonubi, and other stakeholders, have since intervened in the matter.
