A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order preventing the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions from conducting disciplinary proceedings against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central.
The court’s decision, given by Justice Obiora Egwuatu, came on Tuesday after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team filed an ex parte application.
The controversy began on February 20 when the Kogi Central senator clashed with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the allocation of seats. Akpoti-Uduaghan refused her assigned seat, disregarded Akpabio’s directive, and repeatedly raised a point of order, despite being overruled.
Senator Yemi Adaramodu, representing Ekiti South, noted that the incident damaged the Senate’s image. Efforts to clarify the matter were unsuccessful, with public opinion largely shaped by the actions of the Kogi lawmaker.
In response, the Senate referred Akpoti-Uduaghan to the Ethics Committee for disciplinary review. The decision, made during last Tuesday’s plenary session, was based on a report presented by Adaramodu. A voice vote called by Akpabio led to unanimous approval for the matter to be sent to the committee for further investigation.
The Senate President instructed the committee to thoroughly review the incident and provide a report.
