All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), in Osun State has decried the scarcity of money in circulation, saying it is affecting the purchasing power of residents to buy farm produce.
Mr Moses Oladipupo, the Osun Vice President of AFAN made this known during an interview with reporters on Wednesday in Osogbo.
Oladipo said that unavailability of money was affecting farmers in the state as they were being forced to sell their produce at below cost or ridiculous prices in the market.
“We have yams, cocoayam, potatoes, cassava and cassava produce readily available now because we are in the harvest season.”
“The problem farmers are however facing is that cash (money) is scarce and they are not getting money for their produce.”
“When farmers take their produce to the market, and the people who want to buy these items don’t have cash, the farmers don’t have choice than to sell their produce with what ever is offered them.”
“A lot of farmers are selling their produce at a loss because they don’t have storage for most of their farm produce and they can’t afford to let them perish,” he said.
He said that farmers in the state were just keeping afloat as lack of cash “is really affecting their operation in terms of purchasing agricultural products for farming and also selling their produce after harvest.”
