Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has lauded Nigerian chess grandmaster and founder of Chess in Slums, Tunde Onakoya, for setting a new Guinness World Record with a 64-hour chess marathon.
In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Governor Sanwo-Olu celebrated Onakoya’s remarkable achievement, highlighting that it was not only a personal triumph but also a point of pride for Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.
The Governor commended Onakoya for his remarkable dedication and perseverance, noting that this record-breaking feat showcases his outstanding skill and commitment to chess.
Sanwo-Olu also took the opportunity to recognize Ferdinand, a young chess talent whom he recently met, praising his passion for the game and his inspiring strategic thinking.
In his message, Governor Sanwo-Olu also acknowledged the successes of children from the Chess in Slums initiative, including Jamiu Boluwatife, who recently won the ICN Chess Championship, and the participants from the Chess Tournament at the 2025 United Nations Games in New York.
The Governor’s statement read “Congratulations to Tunde Onakoya for achieving this extraordinary milestone by setting a Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon.
“This is a proud moment for all of us, reflecting Tunde’s resilience and exceptional skill. I also want to commend Ferdinand, whose love for chess and strategic thinking is deeply inspiring. It is uplifting to see children pushing the boundaries of possibility and showcasing their talents on such a prestigious stage.
“I also want to celebrate the talented children from #ChessInSlums, including Jamiu Boluwatife, the ICN Chess Champion, and the participants in the Chess Tournament at the 2025 United Nations Games in New York. These young individuals make us proud, and I have no doubt they will continue to achieve great things.”
Onakoya, together with his American counterpart Shawn Martinez, officially set the Guinness World Record by completing the 64-hour chess marathon at Times Square in New York City, which took place from April 17 to April 20.
A heartwarming moment during the event occurred when Martinez’s wife brought their newborn twins to the venue, adding a personal touch to the historic occasion.
