The Egbeda Local Government Traditional Council in Ibadan, Oyo State, has decried the reckless handling of firearms by police personnel, following the tragic death of an SSS 3 student struck by a stray bullet.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning along the Gbagi market road in Ibadan, as the student was on his way to sit for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination. The bullet, allegedly fired by a police officer during a high-speed chase of a traffic offender, cut short the life of the young student.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Acting Chairman of the Egbeda Traditional Council, High Chief Sharafadeen Alli, who represents the Olubadan, condemned the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday. He described the student’s death as an irreparable loss to the family, the community, and the nation.
“We are deeply pained by this senseless and avoidable tragedy,” Alli said. “The reckless use of firearms in residential areas, especially near schools, is an act of gross negligence. Every citizen’s life, particularly those of our children, must be regarded as sacred.”
The council called on the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the incident, ensuring that the officer responsible faces justice. It also urged the police to prioritize retraining their personnel on firearm safety and to uphold professionalism and caution in the line of duty.
“We demand immediate reform within the police force to prevent such needless tragedies in the future,” Alli added. “No operation or pursuit justifies the loss of innocent lives.”
The council also advocated for adequate compensation and support for the bereaved family, emphasizing that their grief cannot be quantified.
On behalf of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Owolabi Olakunlehin, and the council, Alli extended heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family, school, and community. He reaffirmed the council’s commitment to holding authorities accountable and fostering a safer environment forall residents.
