Iranian authorities executed a man in public on Saturday after he was convicted of raping and murdering a young girl, according to the judiciary.

The crime occurred in the northwestern city of Bukan. The victim’s family actively participated in the legal process and requested a public execution, the judiciary’s official outlet, Mizan Online, reported.

“The case received special attention due to the emotional impact it had on the public,” said Naser Atabati, the provincial chief justice. The death sentence, originally issued in March, was upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court.

Atabati emphasized that the execution was carried out publicly at the request of both the victim’s family and concerned citizens, citing the case’s widespread societal impact.

Public executions in Iran, usually by hanging, are reserved for particularly severe crimes. Under Iranian law, rape and murder are capital offenses.

Iran ranks as the world’s second-highest executioner after China, according to Amnesty International and other human rights organizations.
