A man identified as Bashiru Saidu has been shot dead in a suspected cult-related attack following a violent clash between rival groups in Atan-Ota, Ogun State.
According to reports by Punch, Saidu, believed to be a member of the Eiye Confraternity, was ambushed and gunned down by four armed men who arrived on two motorcycles late Sunday night.
Confirming the incident on Monday, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, said a full investigation is underway to track down those responsible.
“The Ogun State Police Command is investigating a fatal cult-related incident in the Atan-Ota area that led to the death of one individual,” Odutola said.
She explained that officers from the Atan-Ota Division received a distress call around 10 p.m. on Sunday reporting the fatal shooting of 44-year-old Bashiru Saidu along Bankole Onibukun Street.
“The attackers, who were four in number and came on two motorcycles, fled immediately after the shooting,” she added.
Responding officers found the victim with a gunshot wound to the head. His body has been deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary in Ilaro for further examination.
In reaction to the killing, Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, has deployed the Anti-Cultism Unit to the area, instructing them to carry out a thorough investigation to apprehend the culprits.
Odutola condemned the act and reaffirmed the command’s determination to combat cult-related violence and maintain peace and safety across Ogun State. She also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
