A 56-year-old farmer was reportedly killed by suspected Fulani herders in Miango, a community in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victim’s son, Stephen, confirmed the incident to PUNCH Online in Jos on Friday, recounting the violent circumstances that led to his father’s death.

According to Stephen, the incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Thursday when his father visited his farm to check on his millet cultivation. On arriving at the farm, he discovered that herders were grazing cattle on his crops.

Stephen said, “It was yesterday (Thursday) around 5 pm. My father went to his farm in the Miango community, where he cultivated millet and saw some Fulani herdsmen grazing on the farm with their cows.

“My father then approached them with the intention to ask them to remove their cows, as they were destroying the crops.

“And that’s how the herders attacked him. They used their knives and cut all his body, leaving him in a pool of his blood. And that’s how my father died eventually.”

He also expressed frustration with the delay in the response from security operatives. “Some people have reported the incident to the security agents after my father was killed, and it was only this morning, today (Friday), that we saw the security men arrive in the house,” he lamented.

Efforts to reach the Plateau State Police Command spokesperson, Alabo Alfred, were unsuccessful as his phone line was switched off at the time of filing this report.

The killing has sparked renewed concerns among residents over the safety of farmers in the region, with many urging the authorities to intensify efforts in protecting rural communities.

Some residents have called on the state police command and the Special Military Taskforce responsible for peacekeeping in Plateau to investigate the incident thoroughly and bring the attackers to justice.
