The All Progressives Grand Alliance has emerged victorious in the Anambra South Senatorial and Onitsha North 1 State House of Assembly by-elections held on Saturday.
According to the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday, APGA swept all the wards in the seven local government areas that make up the Anambra South Senatorial District, as well as the Onitsha North 1 constituency.
The senatorial by-election was conducted to fill the seat left vacant following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, while the Onitsha North 1 seat was contested after the killing of its former occupant, Justice Azuka.
APGA polled a total of 90,408 votes to defeat other candidates, including the APC, which scored 19,812 votes, and the YPP, which got 6,538 votes.
Announcing the senatorial result, the INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Frank Ojiako, declared: “Emmanuel Nwachukwu, the candidate of APGA, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby returned elected.”
Similarly, the INEC Returning Officer for the state assembly by-election, Prof. Ibiam Ekpe, announced: “Ifeoma Azikiwe emerged winner with 7,774 votes to defeat her closest rival, the ADC candidate, Justice Azuka, who polled 1,909 votes.”
This means Nwachukwu will occupy the Anambra South seat in the Red Chamber, while Azikiwe will represent Onitsha North 1 constituency in the state House of Assembly.
Reacting to the development, Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, in a Facebook post on Sunday, expressed excitement and satisfaction with the outcome, while congratulating the winners.
The governor commended INEC and all stakeholders for ensuring a smooth and peaceful process.
He wrote, “Yesterday, APGA swept the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election! Over 75 per cent of votes cast in our favour, winning 99.99 per cent of polling units and all 118 wards across seven LGAs.
“Onitsha North Constituency 1 was another landmark victory, as APGA won all eight wards. We do not take your support for granted.
“Congratulations to Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu, the very first elected Senator of Anambra South on the platform of APGA since the creation of the party, and also to Mimi Ifeoma Azikiwe, the member-elect for Onitsha North 1 State Constituency.
