A police officer attached to Bekwai Municipal Command, in Ashanti region of Ghana was held hostage during operations by angry youth of Behenase in the area following the arrest of their colleague.
NewsGh.com report that armed police were in the community to calm down a nearly bloody chieftaincy clash between two gates when the incident happened.
According to reports, the residents abducted the officer after police had made arrest of one of the youth said be leading some gangs to burn a local palace.
The police source said, “As peace officers, our core responsibility is to maintain peace and order so we went to the community after Intelligence that the youth are causing confusion. One guy was arrested and was brought to station. …without knowing, these stubborn youth had also abducted one of us on condition that if the suspect is not freed, they will also keep our colleague hostage.”
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has declined comment except to say police is investigating the matter to ensure perpetrators of such heinous crimes are brought to justice.
The abducted policeman has since been released after the suspect was granted bail and expected to be reporting periodically.
