The mother of late Afro-Fuji singer Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, has revealed that her son had been battling a prolonged and mysterious illness long before his untimely death.
Speaking in an emotional video that has since gone viral, the grieving mother, Saida, said the 22-year-old artiste suffered from a condition locally referred to as “Ogu oru,” which frequently triggered seizures and severely affected his health.
According to her, the illness resurfaced shortly after the birth of Destiny Boy’s child. She recounted that barely four days after the baby’s naming ceremony, the singer collapsed while visiting a traditional ruler, Oba Edu Ifayomi, who had a close relationship with the family.
“After the naming ceremony of his child, we went to Oba Edu Ifayomi, who initiated him traditionally and loved him like a son. That was when the sickness caught up with him again and he fell,” she said.
She explained that Destiny Boy was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was treated and later transferred to other medical facilities. According to her, the traditional ruler continued to support the family financially throughout the period.
As his condition persisted, the family reportedly explored both medical and traditional treatment options in a desperate bid to save him.
“When we saw the pattern of the sickness, we decided to go the traditional way, and Oba Edu asked us to bring him to his place. I was the one who even bathed him with the soap he gave us. After that, he became stable for a while,” she added.
Saida described the illness as one that caused repeated seizures and nearly affected her son’s mental stability, noting that family members were constantly on hand to restrain and calm him during episodes.
She also dismissed rumours circulating online that the late singer was involved in money rituals, describing such claims as false, hurtful, and disrespectful to his memory.
“People spreading lies just to trend should be careful. We hid this sickness from the public because he was a superstar. We went to different herbalists and clerics, all in an effort to make sure he was completely healed,” she said.
According to her, Destiny Boy appeared healthy just a day before his death. She said he went about his usual activities, interacted with fans, bought items for people around him, and even spoke about an upcoming performance scheduled for Sunday.
Tragically, he reportedly suffered another seizure when his traditional benefactor was out of town. By the time help arrived and he was rushed to the hospital, it was too late.
Destiny Boy passed away on Sunday at the age of 22. News of his death shocked fans nationwide after a video showing his lifeless body surfaced on social media.
The late singer rose to prominence in 2019 after releasing a Fuji-inspired cover of Davido’s hit song If, which brought him widespread recognition and marked the beginning of a promising music career cut short.
