Nollywood actress Ajara Lasisi, popularly known as Aunty Ajara, has passed away after a prolonged battle with illness.
Her death was confirmed on Thursday by Nollywood director Tobi Oladele Teemony, also known as Tee Mony, in a statement shared on Instagram.
According to him, the actress died overnight after what he described as a long and courageous fight for her life.
“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved actress, Aunty Ajara. She passed on overnight after a long and courageous battle with illness,” the statement read.
Teemony expressed gratitude to Nigerians and supporters across the world who stood by the late actress during her illness, offering prayers, encouragement, and financial assistance.
“We are deeply grateful to everyone who stood by her with prayers, contributions, encouragement, and compassion,” he said.
He also appealed to members of the public to stop sending donations to the bank account earlier shared for her medical treatment, stressing that further financial contributions were no longer necessary.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, loved ones, and everyone grieving this painful loss,” the statement added.
The announcement was accompanied by a video message from the actress’s elder brother, Ridwan Lasisi, who also confirmed her passing.
“Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am Ajara’s brother. The doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on,” he said.
He thanked family members, colleagues, and supporters for their concern and assistance, while also urging the public to discontinue donations.
“We sincerely appreciate everyone who supported us. Please, there is no need to send money anymore. Thank you for your kindness,” he added.
Aunty Ajara’s death came about a week after Teemony and several Nollywood colleagues, including Ronke Oshodi Oke, made urgent appeals for financial support, revealing that her health had deteriorated despite ongoing treatment.
At the time, Teemony disclosed that significant funds had already been spent on her care, but her condition continued to worsen, prompting further calls for assistance.
Earlier reports indicated that the actress was pregnant and battling a liver-related illness. Colleagues said she was placed on oxygen in hospital as her condition became critical.
Several Nollywood stars, including Wumi Toriola, Mide Martins, Afeez Owo, and Ronke Oshodi Oke, had rallied public support and appealed for financial assistance amid growing concern over her health.
Her passing has since drawn an outpouring of grief across the Nigerian film industry and beyond.
