A public affairs analyst, Oluwatosin Babatunde, has urged political stakeholders in Osun State to protect the neutrality of the Inter-Party Advisory Council and resist any attempt to politicise the body.

In a statement issued in Osogbo on Saturday, Babatunde, a journalist and public affairs commentator, expressed concern over the council’s independence amid evolving political developments in the state. He warned that IPAC’s credibility could be eroded if its non-partisan stance is compromised.

“IPAC has long served as the conscience of political parties in Osun State. Its authority is rooted in the trust it commands across party lines, not in the dominance of any particular party. Safeguarding its independence is essential,” he said.

Babatunde noted that IPAC plays a crucial role in resolving inter-party disputes, advising the Independent National Electoral Commission, and promoting free, fair and transparent elections. He acknowledged the contributions of Pastor Victor Akande as chairman, crediting him with encouraging dialogue, coordination and peaceful conflict resolution among political actors in the state.

However, he argued that recent political shifts have placed the chairman in a delicate position.

“With Governor Ademola Adeleke now aligned with the Accord Party and seeking re-election under its platform, the continued leadership of Pastor Akande raises questions about IPAC’s perceived neutrality,” Babatunde stated.

He maintained that the council must retain the ability to commend the government when necessary and criticise it when required, stressing that a chairman closely associated with the ruling party may struggle to discharge those responsibilities impartially.

According to Babatunde, stepping aside in such circumstances should be seen as an act of statesmanship rather than weakness, as it would protect the integrity of the institution and reinforce public confidence.

“IPAC must remain above partisan interests and operate independently of the ruling party’s fortunes. For democracy to flourish in Osun State, the council’s neutrality must not be compromised. Institutional credibility should always take precedence over tenure,” he added.
