The People’s Redemption Party (PRP) on Wednesday conducted its state congress in Osogbo, Osun State, electing new executive council members to steer the affairs of the party.
The Congress was held at the Party Secretariat in Osogbo.
Speaking at the congress, the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the party in Osun State, Abiodun Falodun, said the congress was successfully conducted and that all new executive members emerged unopposed.
Falodun explained that the congress served as a constitutional forum to elect leaders into the state executive council.
“Today, we have just conducted our congress and new executive council members have been elected unopposed. These are people who have fulfilled the requisite conditions for the congress,” he said.
He added, “When we talk about congress, it is the forum where we elect new members into the executive council to continue steering the wheel of the party in the state, and this we have just conducted today.”
Charging the newly elected officers, Falodun urged them to place public interest above personal ambition.
“As our slogan goes, we are for the socialist reconstruction of Nigeria and the Nigerian economy. They should work towards that and place it above selfish and personal interest. That is how we can move Nigeria forward. We start from here, and by God’s grace, we will achieve our aim,” he said.
Also speaking, a former chairman of the party, Comrade Folorunso Mojide, described the congress as peaceful and well organised.
“I thank God the congress was successful. When I was told it would hold today, I prepared myself to attend. On getting here, I saw everything was in a very good atmosphere. There was no rancour, no misunderstanding among members,” Mojide said.
He noted that the party had maintained a peaceful record in the state and across the country
“We brought this party to Osun State and it has been existing since then. We don’t have any misunderstanding with other parties. We are peaceful people and always peacemakers,” he said.
Referring to the late PRP leader, Balarabe Musa, Mojide said, “From Balarabe Musa, who was our leader, he was a very peaceful man, and all his followers are peaceful too. We don’t make trouble.”
He called for prayers and support for the new executive members. “The newly elected officers need prayers. We have to support them so they will not be misled. They must listen carefully before taking decisions. I pray for the success of the party in the coming elections,” he said.
The State Legal Adviser of the party, Barrister Adewale Olaitan Oyelami, said the congress was held in compliance with directives from the party’s National Executive Committee.
“What led to this congress is the need to comply with the directives of the NEC of the party. We thank God it was very successful. We have just been elected and the inauguration will take place on March 2, by God’s grace,” Oyelami said.
He described the newly elected team as experienced and capable. “It is a formidable team. Many of us have worked together for a long time. The elected chairman and other officers have held previous positions in the party. All members of the new EXCO are capable of taking the party to greater heights,” he added.
In his acceptance remarks, the newly elected State Chairman, Kasim Raji, expressed gratitude to party leaders and members for their confidence.
“Our party is one of the oldest in Nigeria. We have governed in parts of the North, including Kaduna State. In Osun, we have participated in various elections, including the House of Assembly and governorship polls. We are on ground,” Raji said.
He described the congress as credible and transparent. “To substantiate leadership, you must elect leaders through majority vote, and that is what we did today. We filled sixteen positions through a genuine congress,” he stated.
Raji thanked party elders, former chairmen and members for their support. “I give glory to God for the success of this congress. There was no rancour, no fighting. We are a peaceful and loving party, and we will continue to remain so,” he said.
