President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of soldiers from the 29 Task Force Brigade of Operation HADIN KAI, following a coordinated terrorist attack on their base in Benisheikh, Borno State.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the fallen troops as “unforgettable heroes” who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation. He also extended his condolences to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the families of the deceased.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that the early morning attack led to casualties among the troops. According to the President, the soldiers fought bravely to repel the insurgents and prevent them from overrunning nearby communities.
Tinubu noted that ongoing military offensives have put insurgent groups under pressure, describing the latest attack as a desperate move by weakened fighters.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of our gallant soldiers, led by Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our country,” the President said.
He urged serving troops not to lose morale, encouraging them to remain steadfast and committed to their duty with courage and patriotism.
The President also reassured the military of continued support from the Federal Government, promising improved welfare and provision of necessary equipment to strengthen operations against insurgents.
He further called on Nigerians and the media to support the Armed Forces, warning against any actions or narratives that may undermine the sacrifices of military personnel.
Tinubu extended his sympathy to the government and people of Borno State, pledging sustained collaboration to restore peace and security in the region.
The attack underscores the persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s North-East, where troops have battled insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province for over a decade.
Reports indicate that the assault claimed the life of Brigadier-General O.O. Braimah and several soldiers, while also destroying military vehicles and infrastructure. The incident marks the second killing of a senior military officer in recent months, following the death of Brigadier-General Musa Uba in November.
