President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday received former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, in what appears to be part of ongoing consultations on regional political developments and Nigeria’s role in continental affairs.
The meeting, which took place in the afternoon, was confirmed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who shared photographs of the visit on social media. The images showed both leaders in a relaxed discussion inside the President’s office.
Although no official details were released on the agenda, the visit is believed to be in line with a series of engagements between the two leaders, particularly on issues affecting West Africa.
Jonathan’s latest visit comes months after a similar meeting in November 2025, shortly after he returned from Guinea-Bissau, where he led an election observation mission under the West African Elders Forum.
At the time, the former president had been evacuated from the country following political unrest linked to a disputed presidential election. Speaking after his meeting with Tinubu then, Jonathan had urged regional leaders to prioritise dialogue and ensure that democratic processes were upheld.
Over the years, Jonathan has remained actively involved in peace-building and election monitoring efforts across the region, playing key roles in countries such as Mali, The Gambia, Liberia, and Guinea-Bissau.
His continued engagements highlight Nigeria’s influence in West African diplomacy, with Wednesday’s meeting further reinforcing ongoing efforts to promote stability and democratic governance in the region.
