Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has defended the nomination and confirmation of Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor, saying the decision was based on merit, competence, and his capacity to contribute to the state’s development.
The governor made this known during the 39th Executive Council Meeting held at the Government House in Kano, according to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad.
Yusuf explained that Garo emerged from a pool of candidates after careful consideration of their track records and ability to deliver.
“We tried as much as possible to select someone who can provide matching contributions toward the development of the state,” the governor said.
He noted that several names were reviewed before settling for Garo, stressing that the process involved evaluating past performance, competence, and potential impact.
“So many names were presented, but we had to look into their past performances and what they have done for the state, as well as what they can still contribute. Murtala Sule Garo is a seasoned politician who can make meaningful contributions,” he added.
Garo’s nomination followed the resignation of the former Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, whose exit created the vacancy.
Governor Yusuf also commended the Kano State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Jibril Ismail Falgore, for the swift confirmation of the nominee.
He assured that the new deputy governor would be sworn in soon and called on residents and stakeholders to support the administration in delivering its mandate.
The governor further congratulated the newly appointed Head of Service, Hajiya Bilkisu Shehu Maimota, praising her experience and contributions to the state’s civil service.
He urged civil servants and other stakeholders to rally behind her to ensure success in her new role.
At the council meeting, Yusuf was also presented with 39 awards of excellence from various organisations within and outside Kano State, in recognition of his administration’s performance.
Among the recognitions was a symbolic gift of ₦30,000 from a primary school teacher, offered in appreciation of the government’s efforts in improving the education sector.
