Cristiano Ronaldo is set to make history after being named in Portugal national football team’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first male player to feature in six editions of the tournament.
The 41-year-old forward continues to defy age at the international stage, maintaining his place in a squad filled with a blend of experienced stars and emerging talents.
While Ronaldo’s inclusion had been widely anticipated, it still marks a major milestone in world football, as no male player has previously appeared in six World Cup tournaments.
Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez said the squad announcement also carried emotional significance, as the team continues to honour the memory of former international Diogo Jota.
Martínez said Jota’s spirit remains an inspiration to the squad, noting that the team is determined to pursue success in the tournament in his memory and in recognition of the example he set while representing the national side.
Ronaldo remains a key figure in Portugal’s World Cup ambitions, although the coaching crew is expected to manage his playing time carefully throughout the competition.
The squad also features top names such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, João Félix, Rafael Leão and Gonçalo Ramos.
Ronaldo already holds the men’s records for most international appearances and goals, and his selection for another World Cup adds yet another chapter to his legendary career.
Portugal will head into the tournament with high expectations, as the country hopes its current generation of talented players can finally deliver World Cup glory.
