Aston Villa produced a stunning display in Istanbul on Wednesday night to defeat SC Freiburg 3-0 and lift the UEFA Europa League trophy for the first time.

The victory marked Villa’s first major European triumph since winning the European Cup in 1982 and capped another remarkable season under manager Unai Emery, who secured his fifth Europa League title as a coach.

After a tense opening period with few clear chances, Villa took control of the final late in the first half through a brilliant strike from Youri Tielemans.

The midfielder volleyed home a precise cross from Morgan Rogers in the 41st minute, sending Villa supporters inside the Vodafone Arena into celebration. Villa doubled their lead moments before halftime when Emiliano Buendía curled a superb effort into the top corner from outside the penalty area.

The English side completed the rout in the 58th minute as Rogers finished from close range after connecting with another Buendía delivery, effectively ending Freiburg’s hopes of a comeback.
Villa continued to dominate the contest and could have scored more, with Amadou Onana and Buendía both going close as Emery’s men controlled proceedings from midfield to defence.

Captain John McGinn delivered another commanding performance, while goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez made an impressive save to deny Freiburg late in the match.

The triumph adds European silverware to an already memorable campaign for Aston Villa, who have also secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League after finishing in the Premier League top five.

For Emery, the victory further strengthens his reputation as one of Europe’s most successful managers in continental competition, with the Spaniard once again proving his mastery of the Europa League stage.
