The Osun State Police Command has commenced a high-level investigation into the shooting of the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osogbo Local Government, Hon. Ashimiyu Ajibola, in what authorities described as an attempted murder.
The incident occurred at about 11:50 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, along the MDS area of Osogbo, when two armed men riding on a motorcycle allegedly attacked the politician and opened fire on him.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, police operatives responded swiftly after receiving a distress call and immediately deployed tactical and conventional teams to the scene.
The statement said officers evacuated Ajibola to a medical facility where he is currently receiving treatment. Medical personnel reportedly confirmed that the PDP chairman is in stable condition and responding positively to treatment.
The police also launched a manhunt for the attackers, who fled the scene after the shooting. Preliminary investigations led to the recovery of exhibits, which have been subjected to forensic examination as part of efforts to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Ibrahim Gotan, condemned the attack and directed a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Gotan ordered all relevant investigative units to deploy available resources to uncover those behind the attack and ensure their arrest and prosecution.
“The Command will leave no stone unturned in the ongoing investigation,” the statement quoted the commissioner as saying.
The police further appealed to members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding while providing credible information that could assist security agencies in tracking down the perpetrators.
The incident has heightened concerns over political violence in the state ahead of the 2026 governorship election, with security agencies intensifying efforts to maintain peace and public safety.
