The Imo State Police Command has detained six police officers captured in a viral video allegedly assaulting a young man in Ikeduru Local Government Area of the state.
The command said disciplinary procedures had commenced against the officers following the circulation of the video on social media.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, said the incident occurred on June 22, 2026, at Nduhobokwe, Uzoagba, in Ikeduru LGA.
According to the command, a preliminary review of the footage led to the identification of the officers as Inspector Ugochukwu Ibe, Inspector Nwachi Chimezie, Sergeant Ugoezuhu Austin, Corporal Michael Obi, Corporal Ebuka Onwuegbu and Corporal Amos Sunny.
The video, which was shared online by X user @ChidiebubeMedia, showed armed uniformed officers allegedly flogging two men repeatedly on an untarred road.
Okoye stated that the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Audu Garba Bosso, had ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
“Following a prompt review of the incident, the six officers involved have been identified as operatives of the command.
“Consequently, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Audu Garba Bosso, has directed a thorough investigation into the incident to establish the full circumstances surrounding the misconduct of the officers involved,” the statement said.
The police spokesperson added that the officers had been taken into custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
“The officers have been taken into custody, and disciplinary procedures have been initiated in line with the extant regulations of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.
The command condemned the conduct of the officers, describing their actions as inconsistent with the ethical and professional standards expected of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The actions of the officers, as seen in the video, are inconsistent with the values, ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force,” the statement added.
The police assured residents of a transparent investigation and pledged to make the findings and outcome of the disciplinary process public upon completion.
