Students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) have staged a peaceful protest over the death of their colleague, Miss Grace Osunlakin, blaming inadequate healthcare facilities on campus for the tragedy and calling for urgent intervention by the Osun State Government and the university management.
The deceased, a 400-level student of the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, reportedly died after an alleged lack of access to adequate medical care.
The protest followed the university management’s decision to indefinitely shut down the College of Law, Ifetedo Campus, in the wake of the incident.
In videos circulating on social media, grieving students were seen chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards as they condemned what they described as poor healthcare services across the institution’s campuses.
The protesters alleged that the absence of sufficient medical personnel, inadequate emergency response, and a lack of essential medical equipment contributed to the death of their colleague.
They also claimed that the institution had witnessed similar incidents in the past, alleging that poor access to quality healthcare had been a recurring challenge for students.
The students expressed frustration over what they described as the government’s failure to prioritise students’ welfare despite the payment of high tuition fees. They urged the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke and the university management to strengthen medical facilities, deploy qualified healthcare personnel, and improve emergency healthcare services across all campuses to prevent similar incidents in the future.
