The pupils and teachers abducted by gunmen in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending more than 50 days in captivity.
The development was announced on Friday by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, through a post on his official X account.
Onanuga disclosed that the victims were rescued through the efforts of Nigerian security agencies, describing their release as a major breakthrough.
“Finally, all the kidnapped pupils and teachers in Orire, Oyo, have been rescued by our security agencies,” he wrote.
He also revealed that one of the rescued teachers had sent a message expressing appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and the security agencies for securing their freedom.
The victims were abducted during an attack in Orire Local Government Area, sparking widespread concern and renewed calls for improved security in schools and communities across the country.
Their release brings relief to families, residents and education stakeholders who had waited anxiously for weeks while efforts were made to secure their freedom.
Security authorities have yet to provide full details of the rescue operation or indicate whether any arrests were made in connection with the abduction.
The incident had drawn national attention and highlighted the persistent security challenges facing parts of the country, particularly attacks targeting schools and educational institutions.
