The Osun State All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Council has accused Governor Ademola Adeleke of launching what it described as a reckless and unfounded attack on President Bola Tinubu out of fear of defeat in the August 15 governorship election.
The council, in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Head of Media and Publicity Committee, Engr. Oluremi Omowaiye, condemned remarks allegedly made by Adeleke during a campaign outing, where the governor warned against a repeat of the 1983 political crisis in Osun if he loses the forthcoming election.
The APC described the governor’s comments as inflammatory, irresponsible and capable of heating up the political atmosphere in the state.
According to the campaign council, Adeleke also falsely accused President Tinubu of withholding federal allocations meant for the state’s 30 local government councils.
The council dismissed the allegation, insisting that the legally recognised local government administrations in Osun continue to receive their statutory allocations from the Federal Government.
It argued that the governor’s claims were aimed at misleading the public and portraying the President in a negative light.
“The statements are false, distasteful, irresponsible and completely unsubstantiated. They are nothing but a manifestation of the frustration that has enveloped the outgoing governor as the reality of an impending electoral defeat continues to stare him in the face,” the statement read.
The APC further alleged that more than 40 of its members and supporters had been killed by suspected political thugs linked to the ruling Accord Party since Adeleke assumed office in 2022, claiming that at least 10 of the deaths occurred in recent times.
The council also accused the governor of shielding individuals it described as political assassins and criminals, alleging that some were released from prison through executive action before being used to attack opposition members.
It further alleged that Adeleke’s administration would eventually be required to account for the management of public funds, including a ₦2 billion Federal Government grant for the procurement of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses and about ₦17 billion ecological funds received by the state.
According to the APC, the governor should focus on defending his administration’s record rather than making allegations against the President and raising political tension ahead of the election.
The campaign council maintained that the people of Osun had resolved to support the APC governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), in the August 15 poll, insisting that no amount of political rhetoric would change the electorate’s decision.
