The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, publishers of Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, has died at the age of 56.
Oladipo’s death was announced by Eagle Online in the early hours of Wednesday. According to the publication, the veteran journalist was in his usual state of health earlier on Tuesday before he suddenly took ill.
His death was described as a shock to his colleagues, friends and associates.
The death was also confirmed by the President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Danlami Nmodu, who announced the news on the guild’s WhatsApp platform on Tuesday.
Nmodu, who described Oladipo as an Emeritus President of the guild, wrote: “It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”
Oladipo had previously served as president of GOCOP.
The General Secretary of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society, Nkanu Egbe, also announced his death on Wednesday, saying Oladipo died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos.
Egbe described his death as a devastating loss to the cooperative and the Nigerian journalism profession.
“It is with profound sorrow that I announce the sudden death of our President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, who passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Lagos, at the age of 56,” Egbe said.
“Mr Oladipo led our cooperative with dedication, alongside a distinguished journalism career spanning nearly three decades. His passing is a devastating loss not only to IMPCMS but to Nigerian journalism as a whole.”
He said further details on funeral arrangements, condolence visits and interim leadership would be communicated in due course, while urging members to keep Oladipo’s family and the cooperative in their prayers.
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, also mourned the journalist in a Facebook post on Wednesday, describing him as a “complete gentleman, accomplished digital journalist and remarkable human being.”
Sowore wrote: “Dotun Oladipo has passed away. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, and the entire community of digital journalists in Nigeria. May Dotun Oladipo rest in power!”
Oladipo had an illustrious journalism career spanning nearly three decades. He served as Politics Editor of PUNCH Newspapers and was also a member of the newspaper’s Editorial Board.
After leaving PUNCH, he worked with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun before founding Eagle Online, the flagship publication of Premium Eagle Media Limited.
He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.
Following news of his death, professional colleagues and associates took to social media to mourn the veteran journalist, describing him as a thorough professional, humble colleague and dedicated media practitioner.
Oladipo is survived by his family. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later.
