Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after leaving the national team’s training camp following a disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward is awaiting a final disciplinary decision that could result in a suspension ranging from one to six months, according to reports by The Mirror and Portuguese media.

The controversy began after Ronaldo remained an unused substitute in Portugal’s 2–1 Nations League victory over Norway, despite warming up for much of the second half. He subsequently left the team’s camp in Copenhagen ahead of the match against Denmark.

Football transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, who reported on the dispute, said the incident against Norway was central to understanding Ronaldo’s frustration.

“The crucial moment was against Norway,” Romano explained, noting that Ronaldo was unhappy after warming up for about 30 minutes without being brought onto the pitch.

According to Romano’s account, Ronaldo’s frustration was not simply about being left out of the starting line-up but also about how the situation was handled by the coach. Ronaldo reportedly expected Jesus to clarify their discussion publicly, but the coach instead emphasised his authority to make team selections.

Ronaldo later gave his own account of the disagreement, accusing Jesus of breaking his word on two occasions. He maintained that he had not demanded a guaranteed starting position but was unhappy with what he described as a failure to honour their understanding.

The Portuguese captain also accepted responsibility for leaving the camp and apologised to his teammates and supporters. He said the federation should assess his actions and impose the appropriate punishment.

“The consequences of my actions must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation,” Ronaldo said in his statement.

Reports indicate that the potential suspension stems from Article 160 of the FPF’s disciplinary regulations, which provides for sanctions when a player unjustifiably abandons national team duties. A fine may also be imposed, depending on the outcome of the proceedings.

A one-month suspension could affect Ronaldo’s availability for Portugal’s next international fixtures, while a longer ban could have implications for his participation in the later stages of the Nations League.

Despite the dispute, Ronaldo has ruled out retiring from international football. He said he remains willing to represent Portugal after serving whatever sanction is imposed.

Meanwhile, Jesus has indicated that the door remains open for Ronaldo’s return, leaving the possibility of reconciliation as the disciplinary process continues.

The final length of any suspension remains to be determined, and the reported provisional measure should not be mistaken for a confirmed final punishment.
