Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has been given another opportunity to turn the club’s fortunes around, with the under-pressure manager set to remain in charge for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea.
Carrick’s position came under serious scrutiny following United’s disappointing 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth on Sunday, which extended their winless run in all competitions to eight matches.
The 13-time Premier League champions are now just one point above the relegation zone, leaving the club facing mounting pressure to improve their results.
According to Sky Sports, United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, and chief executive, Omar Berrada, held discussions at the club’s Carrington training ground on Monday over Carrick’s future. The club had reportedly been considering alternative candidates before deciding to give him at least one more match to change the situation.
Carrick took charge of training on Tuesday and will lead the team to Stamford Bridge, where United face Chelsea in a crucial encounter that could prove significant for his future.
Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann have reportedly emerged as potential replacements should United decide to dismiss Carrick.
The growing frustration among supporters was evident during Sunday’s defeat at Old Trafford. Fans initially showed support for Carrick, a former United midfielder, before turning their anger towards the players.
Carrick also faces a decision over captain Bruno Fernandes, whom he dropped for the Bournemouth match after the Portuguese midfielder criticised the coaching staff’s tactics following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
United’s difficult run comes as the club struggles to maintain the progress made under Carrick earlier in the year. He was appointed in January 2026 following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim and initially enjoyed an impressive spell, winning 12 of his 17 matches.
That run helped United finish third in the Premier League and secure a return to the Champions League, earning Carrick a permanent appointment on May 22.
However, the team’s current slump has raised fresh questions about his ability to sustain that progress, with the club’s hierarchy now facing another major decision over its managerial direction.
After the Chelsea fixture, United are scheduled to face Roma in the Champions League on November 3 before taking on Aston Villa in the Premier League on November 8.
With results deteriorating and the team hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone, Carrick’s immediate task is to halt the slide and restore confidence in a club that had hoped to build on last season’s recovery.
