Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has assured the people of Ijebuland that a new Awujale of Ijebuland will emerge before May 29, as efforts continue to conclude the succession process following the death of the revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Adetona.
Abiodun gave the assurance at a stakeholders’ meeting of Ogun East Senatorial District in Ijebu-Ode, where he urged residents and interest groups to remain calm while the necessary procedures for selecting a successor are completed.
The governor’s position was contained in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Wednesday by his media adviser, Kayode Akinmade.
He acknowledged the importance of the Awujale stool to the history, cultural identity and unity of Ijebuland, stressing that the succession process must be peaceful and acceptable to the people.
“I acknowledge the importance of the Awujale institution to the cultural heritage, identity and unity of Ijebuland. Our people should remain calm and patient as the necessary processes are being concluded,” Abiodun said.
“Our administration is giving the matter the attention it deserves, with a view to ensuring that the process is concluded peacefully and the emergence of a new Awujale enjoys the acceptance and support of the people,” he added.
The Awujale stool became vacant in July 2025 following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona at the age of 91. The late monarch reigned for 65 years, making his departure a significant moment for Ijebuland and its traditional institution.
The selection of his successor is therefore an important process for the community, given the Awujale’s historical and cultural significance. Abiodun’s latest assurance signals the state government’s expectation that the process will be concluded before the stated deadline.
Beyond the succession issue, the stakeholders’ meeting provided an opportunity for the governor to engage with representatives of various groups, address community concerns and highlight his administration’s achievements over the past seven years.
On economic development, Abiodun identified oil exploration around Eba Island and the proposed Gateway Deep-Sea Port in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area as key projects expected to support growth in the state.
He also highlighted the proposed Blue Marine Special Economic Zone, saying it could attract investment, generate employment and strengthen Ogun’s position in maritime trade, manufacturing and logistics.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and investment promotion, while appreciating President Bola Tinubu for supporting critical projects and initiatives in the state.
He called on residents and community stakeholders to sustain cooperation in the interest of peace, development and unity across Ogun State.
