Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter following the death of CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel after an on-pitch collision during a match against FC Andorra.
The development comes after Insight Links TV previously reported the tragic incident in which the 30-year-old striker collapsed following a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during Monday’s Spanish second-division encounter.
De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest and was rushed to hospital, where he later died on Tuesday.
The goalkeeper was shown a straight red card following the incident, while the match, which was tied at 2-2, was abandoned.
The investigation is now under judicial supervision as authorities seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the player’s death.
However, Spanish judicial authorities have clarified that such investigations are standard procedure following deaths from non-natural causes and do not automatically imply that a crime has been committed.
