The State of Osun House of Assembly has on Wednesday screened Chairman and members of Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) sent to it by the Governor of Osun, Mr. Gboyega Oyetola.
Screened on the floor of the Assembly are Mr. Segun Oladitan (Chairman), Mrs Abosede Omibekun, Mr. Rufus Oyeniran, Alhaja Babalola Adubi, Mr Oladosu Gidigbi, Mr. Yinka Ajiboye and Alhaji Wahaab Adewoyin.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Timothy Owoeye during the screening exercise implored the nominees to deliver a free, fair and credible election worthy of emulation should they be confirmed by the Assembly.
Owoeye stressed that irrespective of planned local government reforms by the federal government, it’s expected that OSIEC should be coming with reforms that will ensure that elections in local governments are seen to be credible.
He held that the 7th Assembly under his watch is committed to see that democracy thrives in all levels of governance.
According to the Speaker, “I am happy that some of the nominees are returning members where they are expected to bring in their wealth of experience.
“The administration of the Local Government tier in Osun is one that the APC-led government has always been bashed for the way it is outlined.
“Just last week, this Assembly sat to amend some sections of the local government creation and administration law to further strengthen it and entrench democracy”.
Owoeye, however charged politicians to allow OSIEC to do their job, noting that with little or no interference the electoral umpire will perform creditably well
Speaking at the screening, the nominated Chairman, Mr. Segun Oladitan stated that if he is confirmed as the head of OSIEC his allegiance will be to the general electorates and the laws of the land.
He added that the Commission under his leadership will strive to make the Institution better than the way it is met by organising elections that are free, fair and credible for the betterment of the state.
