The White House security team had to step in to retrieve a curious toddler who squeezed through the bars of the iron fence surrounding the presidential residence on Tuesday. The child managed to enter the North Lawn from the north side of the property, and access to the White House had to be restricted while Secret Service officers carried the child back to his parents. President Biden was inside the mansion when the incident occurred. The $64m fence is 13ft tall, double its previous height, and has wider gaps between posts.
This isn’t the first time a child has breached White House security. In 2014, a toddler dubbed the “fence baby” made headlines for entering the property. A Secret Service spokesman joked at the time that they had planned to wait until the child could talk before questioning him, but he was instead given a timeout and sent on his way with his parents.
Despite the humour of these incidents, they highlight the importance of proper security measures around important public buildings. The Secret Service has a vital role in ensuring the safety of the President and other officials, and incidents like these demonstrate the constant vigilance required to maintain that safety.
