Senator Jimoh Ibrahim, representing Ondo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has donated ₦10 million to traders who lost their goods in the fire that engulfed the Caring Heart Market, Okitipupa, in Ondo State.
The incident, which occurred on December 12, destroyed fewer than 18 shops stocked with frozen foods and goods worth over ₦50 million.
During his visit to the market on Thursday, Ibrahim, accompanied by traditional rulers from the district, assessed the extent of the damage and sympathized with the affected traders.
While addressing them, he highlighted the lack of water as a major factor that escalated the destruction and pledged to drill a solar-powered borehole at the market. Additionally, he promised to install solar-powered lamps to enhance safety and prevent future occurrences.
“I sympathize with you for the loss of your stalls and goods,” Ibrahim said. “When I learned about the fire, I came here with our traditional rulers to see the extent of the damage. I was informed that water was unavailable, which made it difficult to put out the fire quickly. To address this, I will ensure the market gets a solar-powered borehole and lighting.”
Speaking further, he announced his financial support to the victims. “I have seen the level of destruction and your losses. I am donating ₦10 million to help you restock your goods and rebuild your businesses,” he added.
Chief Mrs. Florence Irinyemi, the Iyalaje of the market, expressed gratitude on behalf of the traders, thanking Senator Ibrahim for his generous donation and efforts to improve the market’s infrastructure.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the midnight fire left traders grappling with significant losses, but the intervention is expected to bring much-needed relief and support.
