On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden announced that he will be running for re-election in 2024. He launched his campaign in a video, emphasising the critical moment America faces, where freedoms and rights are under threat. Biden is the oldest US President in history, and at the end of his second full term in 2029, he will be 86. Vice-President Kamala Harris, 58, will also be running as his running mate, and Julie Chavez Rodriguez, a senior White House adviser, will serve as campaign manager.
While Biden has no major competitors for the Democratic nomination yet, recent polls show that his decision to run again has divided both his party and the American people. An NBC News poll conducted over the weekend found that 70% of Americans and over half of Democrats believe that he should not run again, with age being a major concern. Despite this, his party’s stronger-than-expected performance in the midterm elections has boosted his hopes of re-election, along with his series of legislative achievements to tout on the campaign trail, such as the $1.2tn infrastructure bill.
Biden’s announcement comes after former President Donald Trump announced his bid for the presidency. A rematch between the two is possible for 5 November 2024, with both being considered favorites to win their nominations.
