Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady, has urged Nigerians to prioritize their health and support one another in the battle against cancer. She emphasized the importance of awareness, early detection, and equitable access to treatment in her message commemorating World Cancer Day 2025.
World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, seeks to raise awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment, with a global effort to reduce the disease’s impact.
In her message, the First Lady reflected on the significant toll cancer takes on individuals and families in Nigeria and worldwide. She stated, “As we observe World Cancer Day today, we are reminded of the burden cancer places on millions of individuals and families in Nigeria, and around the globe.”
This year’s theme, “United by Unique,” highlights the need for personalized cancer care that meets the distinct needs of each patient. Senator Tinubu remarked, “The theme underscores the importance of adapting cancer treatments to each individual. Today is a reminder of our collective responsibility to address this global health challenge.”
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of death in Nigeria. However, the First Lady emphasized that with determination and collaboration, the narrative can change. She added, “Every individual, no matter their socio-economic background, deserves the chance to live a healthy life, free from cancer’s devastating effects.”
She called on Nigerians to take proactive steps by undergoing regular screenings and embracing early detection practices, which can significantly improve survival rates. Additionally, she pledged to continue supporting initiatives that increase cancer awareness and make treatment more accessible.
She concluded by urging collective action from healthcare stakeholders, government agencies, and the public: “Let us unite to raise awareness about cancer, prioritize screening, early detection, and equal access to treatment for everyone. I urge all Nigerians to focus on their health and support one another in this collective fight against cancer. May God protect us all.”
