Oyo State governor, Engr Seyi Makinde has stated that he will reveal his preferred successor in January 2026.

This was stated on Monday by Makinde during the 11th Omituntun Ramadan lecture, which took place at the government house arcade in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.

The lecture titled ‘Benefits of Being a Good Neighbour: An Islamic Perspective’, was delivered by Yunus Olushina Teliat, the grand Chief Imam of Ogbomosho Land.

Religious and political leaders, including Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of the state, attended the event.

In a short address delivered by the governor largely in Yoruba language, Makinde stated that the lecture gives him the opportunity to appreciate Muslim leaders in the state for their support towards his administration.

The Oyo governor also solicited for more prayers for his administration.

Makinde said he is not a “lame duck” and is aware that some individuals are considering pursuing “other ventures” as his time in office gradually draws to a close.

Addressing Abbas Oloko, a popular socialite, Makinde jokingly said his billboard at the Isale Alfa area of the state should not be removed.

The Oyo governor said in January 2026, the picture of his preferred successor will be emblazoned on the billboard.

Makinde asked Muslim faithful to use the Ramadan period to reflect on the need for peaceful coexistence in society irrespective of religious leanings.

“I’m not yet a lame duck. Please leave my billboard at Isale Alfa,” the governor said.

“In January 2026, we know that political activities will start. I will tell you the picture of the person that will be installed there.”
