Renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has advised young women to be deliberate and discerning when choosing a life partner, cautioning against rushing into marriage out of desperation or societal pressure.

Speaking at a recent student engagement, the award-winning writer, aged 47, underscored the lifelong impact of choosing a spouse, stressing the need to prioritize kindness and emotional support over superficial factors.

“It’s really important who you choose. Young women, choose wisely,” she said. “Sometimes, deep down, you know the person you’re with isn’t good for you, but you feel pressured to get married. Don’t settle. Be careful.”

Adichie emphasized that the right partner can greatly influence one’s overall well-being. “If you choose someone kind and supportive, it changes everything. I can say I chose well. Good men still exist,” she added.

Adichie, best known for literary works such as Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah, has been married to Nigerian-American medical doctor Ivara Esege since 2009. They share three children, a daughter and twin boys.

Her advice comes as she continues to speak openly about personal growth and identity. Recently, Adichie reflected on the empowering journey of reclaiming her original Igbo name, “Chimamanda,” after experiencing a disconnect from her cultural roots.
