A tragic incident unfolded in the Zangon Kaya area of Dawakin Tofa Local Government in Kano State on Friday, as four young men drowned after becoming trapped in a blocked waterway.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the fatalities, saying the victims fell into a drainage channel obstructed by debris from nearby railway construction.

The accident occurred around 1:48 p.m., when two of the men entered the water to swim and quickly became stuck. A third man attempted to rescue them, followed by a fourth, but all were eventually trapped by the blockage.

Despite immediate rescue efforts following an emergency call from a witness, Rabiu Yusif, the four were recovered unconscious and later pronounced dead.

Local residents initially managed to retrieve two of the bodies before emergency services arrived to recover the others.

The victims, all in their twenties, were identified as Bashir Sani, 28; Nasirudden Tasi’u, 25; Usman Ubale, 26; and Yakubu Muhammed, 22. Their remains were handed over to police authorities at the Dawanau Division.

Authorities blamed the incident on local swimming in an obstructed drainage system, warning residents against entering unsafe water channels, especially those affected by construction.
