The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has officially launched a new indigenous social media platform named 2geda, marking a significant step towards digital innovation rooted in Nigerian culture.
The unveiling took place on Saturday at Ilaji Resort and Hotel in Ibadan, Oyo State. During the launch, the Ooni called on the Federal Government, state governments, traditional leaders, and philanthropists to support the initiative, emphasizing its potential to elevate Nigeria’s digital presence globally.
“We must support our youths to make Nigeria great again. They are intelligent and innovative, and they need our encouragement,” he said.
“I appeal to all levels of government, traditional rulers, and philanthropists to rally behind this platform so it can grow to rival global giants like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Snapchat.”
Also present at the event, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, commended the project, noting that 2geda represents more than just a digital tool, it embodies Nigeria’s culture and unity.
“National development requires digital sovereignty,” he stated.
“The Federal Government supports platforms like 2geda that aim to promote national security, unity, and cultural identity among Nigerians both at home and abroad.”
He described the platform as a safe space for Nigerians to connect, share ideas, and build together, stressing that digital innovation is key to youth empowerment and national progress.
“This is more than a product—it is an institution of the future. Let’s embrace it and shape the kind of digital ecosystem we want for future generations.”
In her remarks, Hauwa Ringim, Acting Director of the EFCC’s Ibadan Zonal Office, highlighted the importance of using social media positively, especially in the fight against cybercrime.
“Today is not just a celebration of an indigenous social platform, but also a reminder of how social media can be used responsibly,” she said.
“Our youths are creative and innovative. Platforms like 2geda prove we can create technology that serves us and earns global respect.”
She encouraged young Nigerians to use digital platforms for good, rather than allowing criminals to dominate the online space.
“Social media is here to stay. We must take ownership and use it to protect our society.”
