Teenage sensation Max Dowman etched his name into the history books on Saturday after becoming the youngest goal scorer in the Premier League during Arsenal’s 2–0 victory over Everton.

The 16-year-old winger sealed the win with a stunning stoppage-time goal at the Emirates Stadium. Dowman picked up the ball inside his own half, glided past two Everton defenders and sprinted from the halfway line before calmly tapping into an empty net. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had moved upfield for a late corner, leaving the goal exposed.

At just 16 years and 73 days old, Dowman broke the long-standing record set by James Vaughan, who scored for Everton at 16 years and 270 days against Crystal Palace in 2005.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta described the moment as extraordinary.

“It was a phenomenal moment,” Arteta said after the match. “We spoke before the game about playing with determination and believing we would find a way to win. The effort and commitment from the players were incredible, and the game ended in a way none of us expected. It’s one of the best moments we’ve experienced together here.”

Dowman was playing only his third league game, having previously made two substitute appearances earlier in the season. Arteta introduced the youngster in the 74th minute when the match was still goalless.

The manager said he had a strong instinct to give the teenager a chance.

“In the last few training sessions I just had a gut feeling it was the right moment for him,” Arteta explained. “He doesn’t seem intimidated by the stage or the pressure. He plays naturally and always tries to make something happen. What he produced today was incredible.”

Arteta revealed that his instructions to the youngster were straightforward: go out and make an impact.

“Go and do your thing and win us the game,” he said. “Sometimes in a season something special has to happen, and he has the ability. I just needed to give him the opportunity.”

Dowman not only scored but also helped spark the attacking momentum that led to the breakthrough goal by Viktor Gyökeres late in the match. Arteta noted that the teenager brought fresh energy to the team and lifted the atmosphere inside the stadium.

The victory moved Arsenal 10 points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the table, although the London club has played two more matches. The result strengthens their push for a first Premier League title in 22 years.

Despite his rising fame, Dowman is still a school student. The youngster began training with Arsenal’s senior squad at just 14 and impressed during the club’s pre-season tour of Asia with standout performances against AC Milan and Newcastle United.

Because he is under 18, league regulations require him to use a separate dressing room from the senior players when preparing for matches and training sessions.
