A total of 27 members of the House of Representatives switched political parties on Tuesday, in what is being seen as one of the most significant waves of defections in recent times.

The Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the defections during plenary, formally reading out notices submitted by the affected lawmakers.

The realignment saw notable gains across several parties. The African Democratic Congress welcomed eight lawmakers, five from the Peoples Democratic Party, two from the Labour Party, and one from the All Progressives Congress.

The ruling APC recorded the highest number of defections, gaining 14 members. A significant portion of these came from Kano State, where eight lawmakers previously elected under the New Nigeria Peoples Party crossed over to the ruling party.

The development drew the attention of key political figures, including Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and former Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.

With the latest defections, the APC has further strengthened its dominance in the House, now controlling roughly 280 of the 360 seats.

Other parties also recorded gains. The Action Peoples Party secured two members from the PDP and Labour Party, while the Accord Party added two lawmakers, both from the PDP.

Most of the defecting lawmakers cited internal crises and unresolved disputes within their former parties as the main reasons for their decisions.

The mass movement highlights growing political reshuffling within the Green Chamber as parties begin to reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
